Please join Michael and Đà Nẵng Film Forum for a screening of Charlotte Wells's 2022 UK/USA film Aftersun. Sophie is eleven, on a package holiday at a faded Turkish resort with her father Calum (Paul Mescal), who is about to turn thirty-one and keeps getting mistaken for her older brother. They swim, play pool, sing bad karaoke, eat at the buffet, and film each other on a MiniDV camcorder. Calum is gentle and funny with her, and when she looks away he goes quiet in ways she's too young to read. Twenty years later Sophie is the age her father was that summer, and she goes back to the tapes. Aftersun is Wells's first feature, and she built it out of small ordinary things: a diving lesson, a sunburn, an argument in a rug shop. Frankie Corio had never acted before, and her scenes with Mescal have the loose rhythm of people who actually live together. Mescal was nominated for an Oscar for it. Cutting into the holiday, again and again, is a dark room with a strobe and two figures on a dance floor. Film Club selections are screened in their original languages and shown with both English and Vietnamese subtitles. Discussion will follow the screening. Hosted by Michael.
